Young people are not just beneficiaries of humanitarian action. They are partners, innovators and key voices in building stronger and more resilient communities.

That was the focus in Yola, Adamawa State, as young people, government representatives, humanitarian organisations and development partners gathered for the Northeast Youth in Crisis Confab, NYICC 4.0.

Held under the theme, “Beyond 2026: Youth as Partners in Localizing Humanitarian Action and Building Resilient Communities in Nigeria,” the event provided a platform for young people to discuss the challenges affecting their communities and contribute to conversations around humanitarian response and community resilience.

Organised by ActionAid Nigeria and its partners, the confab placed youth inclusion at the centre of discussions, emphasising the need to move beyond simply speaking for young people to creating opportunities for them to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Convener David Habba stressed the importance of creating platforms where young people can engage with stakeholders, share their experiences and contribute to solutions within their communities.

ActionAid Nigeria also set the tone for the conversations, highlighting the importance of locally led humanitarian action and meaningful youth participation.

The United Nations humanitarian community was represented by Dr. Usman Bala, on behalf of OCHA Country Representative Miss Daniella, with discussions focusing on stronger collaboration between young people, local organisations, government and humanitarian actors.

For participants, the confab was an opportunity to share their experiences and advocate for greater access to opportunities, resources and decision making spaces.

The Adamawa State Government, represented by Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa George Farauta, also joined the conversation, highlighting the importance of collaboration and youth participation in building resilient communities.

As NYICC 4.0 came to a close in Yola, the message was clear: building resilient communities requires more than humanitarian intervention. It requires listening to young people, investing in their ideas and giving them meaningful opportunities to lead.

Beyond 2026, the focus is on turning youth participation from a conversation into action and ensuring that young people are recognised as partners in shaping the future of their communities and Nigeria.
