The Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, on Tuesday held a consultative meeting with House of Representatives aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Yola, urging party stakeholders to embrace unity and consensus ahead of the party primaries.
Speaking during the meeting, Governor Fintiri described consensus as the most practical option for the party, especially in view of prevailing security concerns in the region. According to him, a united political front would reduce internal tensions and enable the party to concentrate on governance and security matters.
The governor also cautioned aspirants against engaging in personal attacks on social media, stressing the need for decorum and responsible conduct to safeguard the party’s image.
He further warned against anti-party activities, noting that the collective interest of the APC should take precedence over individual political ambitions. Fintiri urged the aspirants to remain patient and trust in destiny, saying that “God is the ultimate giver of power.”
“I am a democrat at heart,” the governor said. “That is why I have invited you here as members of one family for consultation. While consensus remains the preferred option to avoid unnecessary tension and time constraints, I assure you that if consensus fails, direct primaries will be conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner.”
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Auwal Tukur, underscored the importance of internal democracy and cooperation among party members as the APC prepares for the primaries.
Responding on behalf of the aspirants, Barr. Aliyu Boya Wakili, Musa Usman Terrang and others commended the governor for initiating dialogue and consultation, describing the move as inclusive and democratic.
They noted that, unlike situations in some states where candidates are allegedly imposed, the Adamawa governor opted for engagement and consultation with party stakeholders.
Political observers say the meeting reflects the governor’s effort to balance party cohesion with a transparent candidate selection process ahead of the elections.
The aspirants are expected to return to their constituencies for further consultations on the governor’s position on consensus, while preparations continue for the possibility of direct primaries if no agreement is reached.
