The Adamawa State Government has taken a major step toward ending years of unpaid gratuities with the commencement of an ₦8 billion payout to retired civil servants across the state and local government system.
The intervention, approved by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in September 2025, includes ₦5 billion for state retirees and ₦3 billion for local government retirees, targeting thousands of pensioners affected by long-standing payment backlogs.
Executive Chairman of the Adamawa State Pension Board, Ibrahim Abba, said the current backlog was inherited from previous administrations, describing the Governor’s action as a decisive response to the hardship faced by retirees.
“If other governments act this way, pension challenges would no longer be an issue,” Abba said, praising the administration for prioritising pensioners’ welfare.
Chairman of the Gratuity Committee and former Head of Service, Benson Jelani, explained that Governor Fintiri constituted an ad-hoc committee to ensure transparency and credibility in the disbursement process.
According to Jelani, the committee adopted a two-stage verification process—documentary and physical—to confirm the authenticity of beneficiaries before payment.
He disclosed that physical verification and payment commenced on December 24, 2025, with the exercise for state retirees largely completed, while local government retirees are currently undergoing verification and payment.
To prevent fraud and ensure direct access to funds, Jelani said all payments are being made through bank drafts, which can only be redeemed by the verified beneficiaries.
The committee expects 2,213 state retirees and 1,937 local government retirees to benefit from the exercise, subject to successful verification and attendance.
Addressing concerns over missing files, Jelani assured that efforts are ongoing to trace outstanding records, stressing that no genuine retiree would be denied their entitlement due to documentation gaps.
Some beneficiaries who have received their gratuities described the process as fair and transparent, while others expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for addressing a long-standing challenge and restoring dignity to retired workers.
